Rio Tinto Simfer celebrates the nomination of two colleagues to the prestigious WIM 100 2024 cohort
Conakry, Republic of Guinea – Rio Tinto and Simfer are proud to announce that Denise Molmou, Flora Specialist within the Biodiversity team, and Fanta Keita, Communities and Regional Manager within the Communities and Social Performance team, have been honoured as part of the international 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining (WIM 100).
The WIM 100 is a biennial publication by Women in Mining UK, which seeks to identify and highlight the best and most inspirational female talent within the global mining industry. This publication recognises women who are pioneers, innovators, and leaders, making impactful changes to ensure the industry operates responsibly, sustainably, and inclusively.
Denise is widely recognised for her botanical work in the region, having discovered new plant species at Simandou, including one named after her – Anacolosa deniseae and she is also currently pursuing her PhD in partnership with Kew Gardens.
Deeply moved by the recognition from WIM 100, Denise Molmou said: “When I saw the nomination letter, it made me so proud that my efforts, my work, are being recognised. I am even more motivated now to continue to inspire women to join the field of science, especially in Guinea, my home.”
Fanta has made remarkable strides in community development, setting up a microfinance structure within the Beyla Business Centre between 2011 and 2016, which supported women seeking to start their own businesses. More recently, Fanta has successfully driven capacity building of local entrepreneurs in Beyla, facilitating the creation of more than 100 companies, nearly 30 of which have contracts with Rio Tinto Simfer or our contractors.
Reflecting on the impact the nomination would have on her and her career, Fanta Keita said: “This nomination is a career highlight and strengthens my drive to support women in the mining sector and beyond. I am committed to the empowerment of women in Guinea.”
Denise and Fanta have consistently demonstrated excellence in their roles, and their achievements are an inspiration for future generations of female leaders. They are the only women from Rio Tinto this year within the WIM 100 – demonstrating the excellence of Guinean talent and the growing relevance of the Simandou project to Rio Tinto.
