Rio Tinto SimFer Celebrates World Water Day with Commitment to Sustainable Water Management and Environmental Stewardship
Conakry, Guinea – Rio Tinto SimFer celebrates World Water Day on 22nd March by reaffirming its dedication to sustainable water management and environmental stewardship. As part of its ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving natural resources, a series of impactful activities have been rolled out in Canga and Loffa.
From March 10-20, teams actively removed waste and debris along the Loffa and Mya rivers to protect aquatic ecosystems and improve water quality. Additionally, native plants were grown and prepared for riverbank restoration, contributing to the health and stability of local ecosystems. On March 22, trees were delivered and planted along the Loffa and Mya rivers to reduce erosion, enhance biodiversity, and support long-term environmental sustainability.
The Simandou Range is a critical water source, forming the headwaters of four major rivers. Since 2004, Rio Tinto Simfer has been conducting extensive water quality monitoring to assess environmental and community impacts. Recognising the importance of responsible water management, the company is implementing a Mine Water Management System to regulate dewatering flows and maintain water availability for local communities, control erosion and sedimentation to protect downstream habitats.
“World Water Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on our responsibility to manage water resources sustainably. At Rio Tinto SimFer, we are committed to implementing practices that protect and preserve water for future generations,” said Fabory Zoumanigui, Superintendent, Environment Monitoring. “Our activities in Canga and Loffa demonstrate our dedication to environmental stewardship. By engaging with local communities and promoting sustainable water use, we are making a positive impact on the environment and the lives of those who depend on these vital resources,” he added.
Rio Tinto SimFer is dedicated to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. Our initiatives in Canga and Loffa are designed to engage local communities, raise awareness, and drive positive change.
