SimFer takes a major step in supporting strong communities with the provisional handover of replacement houses in Moribadou and Foma
Tangible step in supporting sustainable resettlement illustrates strong commitment to livelihood restoration and sustainable development in Guinea
Beyla, Republic of Guinea – SimFer, the joint venture between the Government of Guinea, Rio Tinto and CIOH consortium led by Chinalco, has this month provisionally handed over new homes to community members impacted by the Simandou project. This is part of the implementation of SimFer’s Assisted Self-Reconstruction (ARA) strategy, which aims to give those living alongside Simandou control over their long term future by funding new homes on existing land owned by those physically displaced through the construction of the SimFer mine.

Launched in May 2025, the construction process included public and individual consultations, site selection, and plan approval for each home, followed by rigorous monitoring of the work before provisional handover to the relevant community members. Of the five households physically displaced by mine construction, three – one in Siatouro and two in Foma – chose for SimFer to construct homes for them on their own plots of land nearby. This approach helps to minimise disruption of communities, reduce negative impacts of the project and ensure restoration of livelihoods.
The ARA mechanism provides funding for the cost of building a house, with characteristics that represent significant improvements to the original homes impacted by the project. The beneficiary provides the land and receives technical support throughout the process from an independent consulting engineer.

Carboni Simone, Head of Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration at Rio Tinto SimFer said: “This program demonstrates our direct collaboration with the community in promoting sustainable development. We are fully committed to supporting communities in building a shared future based on trust, solidarity and sustainability. We wish these families all the best in their new homes and we look forward to continuing to work and live alongside each other for many years to come.”
