Prioritising Local Employment

In collaboration with the government of the Republic of Guinea and our strategic partners, we are implementing initiatives and policies aimed at enhancing the skills of local populations and ensuring equitable distribution of employment opportunities. We will prioritise local employment by posting available jobs on our website and on Guinea’s recruitment platforms.

The Simandou project currently employs over 9,400 people in the country, either directly or through partners. 83% of them are Guinean. In compliance with Guinean legislation, all unskilled labor for the project will be recruited from local communities.

Once the mine is fully operational, the workforce on-site is expected to reach approximately 2,050 individuals, primarily recruited from Guinea, with a smaller number of expatriate employees possessing specialized skills and experience.

Procurement

An essential element of our local content policy involves an approach to procurement and contracting at all stages of the project, ensuring that local businesses have the opportunity to participate. To encourage direct purchases from local businesses, we require bidders for large-scale works to provide a competitive plan focused on local content, with a preference criterion for local companies in all procurement activities. To support small businesses, we have established processes and policies that encourage local purchasing and cascade throughout our supply chain.

Guinean businesses already play a key role in the realization of the Simandou project, including in the construction of access roads, sanitary facilities, and accommodation campsites on the mine site.

Currently, over 300 Guinea-registered companies provide Rio Tinto with a range of products and services. These include Atiko Guinée, which supplies CATERPILLAR engineering and construction equipment GPC, a construction and engineering company that has carried out rehabilitation works in Canga, IBS, a provider of logistics and project solutions to the Canga camp, and Welhy-CIS, a company that provides catering and sanitation services.
