Maférinyah, Republic of Guinea – Rio Tinto and the NGO Club des Amis du Monde on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024 launched the program titled “Education de la Deuxième Chance pour les Femmes en Guinée.” during an official ceremony held in Maférinyah. This program aims to support young girls and women in the communities along the Forécariah corridor to enable them to enhance their economic and social potential and access new economic opportunities.

To this end, the partners will work on training 800 girls/women aged 15 and over from the localities of the Forécariah prefecture. A first pilot phase will last two years during which 32 literacy centers will be identified and fully equipped. Club des Amis du Monde and Rio Tinto have jointly defined two main axes of work for their collaboration: functional literacy and professional training. In collaboration with the targeted communities, several programs will be implemented, including:

  • A literacy program in national and/or international languages and digital skills;
  • An accelerated program to help non-schooled girls and women reintegrate into formal and non-formal education systems;
  • Training programs enabling access to vocational schools;
  • A support program for the mothers of learners to become fervent artisans of girls’ education;
  • A program aimed at developing a conducive environment for childcare for mother-students.

Boubacar SYLLA, President of the NGO Club des Amis du Monde, added: “Investing in the education of young girls and women in Guinea is essential to stimulate local economic development. The program we are launching will offer hundreds of Guinean women a new chance to develop fundamental skills, with the ultimate goal of integrating them into professional training. We are delighted to unite our efforts with Rio Tinto’s team in Guinea and to see that Guineans living near the TransGuinean corridor will benefit from the positive outcomes of the Simandou project.”

Samuel Gahigi, General Manager of Rio Tinto in Guinea, added: “Guinea needs all its talents. That is why we have placed education at the heart of our strategy to support socio-economic development along the prosperity corridor of the TransGuinean. We are honored to be able to offer a new educational opportunity to these girls and women living in regions where access to education may be hindered, thanks to our partner Club des Amis du Monde. We firmly believe that this initiative will help catalyze the untapped potential of these communities, thus fostering a more prosperous future for all.”

This initiative is a direct extension of the multiple actions undertaken by Rio Tinto in collaboration with local partners to support socioeconomic development in areas near the future TransGuinean railway line. The Jamila Foundation, which has been conducting a professional training program alongside Rio Tinto since October 2023, aiming to train 300 women and girls throughout Guinea, will also be consulted on this new initiative to maximize synergies between programs. The “Education de la Deuxième Chance pour les Femmes en Guinée” program also aligns with the national objectives set by the Guinean government as part of the Decennial Education Program in Guinea (ProDEG) for the period 2020-2029.
