It provided a space for open dialogue on how work is planned and carried out, with a focus on understanding the risks faced across the project and strengthening the systems, interfaces and controls needed to prevent serious incidents and fatalities. Participants affirmed a shared commitment to continuously improving safety performance, reflecting Rio Tinto SimFer’s commitment to safety as a core value and a fundamental responsibility.

Therese Dower, General Manager of Health, Safety & Environment at SimFer, stated:

“The safety of everyone working on the project is our number one priority. Everyone going home safely to their family after work is the single most important thing for Rio Tinto SimFer.

The project is delivered by a broad network of contractors and partners across mining, logistics, infrastructure, business services, marine operations and health and safety. This forum strengthens how we work together, building trust and shared understanding through open, direct engagement.

Safety improves when we look clearly at how work is done on site and act decisively to address risks collectively — through consistent safety standards, clear accountability and a shared commitment to protecting every person working on this project.”

Forum participants gathered around a working table, discussing critical controls and incident-prevention practices.

The forum reinforced expectations on leadership accountability, critical risk management and everyday compliance with safety rules, while promoting shared learning and consistent safety practices across the project.

By strengthening collaboration between Rio Tinto SimFer and its contracting partners, the Safety Forum forms part of the project’s ongoing efforts to prevent fatalities and serious incidents, and to deliver Simandou in line with international safety standards.
